Brody Markham has endured a nightmare. Home after spending the last five years in prison, Brody is trying to survive in a world he no longer recognizes. While his family and friends desperately try to reach through to him, he shelters himself further and further from their love.

Alyssa Myers has worked her entire life to distance herself from the luxurious and privileged lifestyle in which she was raised. Running her non-profit agency, The Haven, Alyssa is content to spend her days helping abused animals find sanctuary, which fulfills her in a way money can’t buy.

Maybe Alyssa recognizes some of the same characteristics in Brody that she sees in her homeless wards. Or maybe she just sees his struggle to surface from the darkness, but Alyssa is powerless to stop her personal quest to make Brody whole again.

When secrets are uncovered, Brody has to decide if he’s going to give in to the darkness or accept the light that Alyssa offers him.

Make It A Double The Last Call Series Book 2 edition by Sawyer Bennett Literature Fiction eBooks

I read On The Rocks (the first book the Last Call Series) and couldn't wait to read Brody's book.

Brody is Hunter's twin (who you meet in the first book). Brody was sent to jail for 5 years for killing a person. He's just been released from jail and he's a brooding man. Understandably, since he was on his way to becoming a doctor, when he lost everything, his girlfriend, his freedom and the opportunity to become a doctor. Now people shy away from him. Hunter gave him a job at his bar called the Last Call in the hopes of helping him get back on his feet.

Alyssa is a very rich friend of Hunter's sister Casey. Unfortunately, Brody just thinks of her as a rich, entitled, snooty girl and wants nothing to do with her. What he doesn't realize that the only truth to that depiction of her is rich.

Alyssa uses her money to run a no-kill shelter for animals. She's the only employee and has volunteers help her. Brody must do community service and loves animals but refuses to work with Alyssa until one day when Alyssa is in a bind. She comes running to Hunter's house to ask for help when she finds only Brody. To her surprise, Brody volunteers to help her out. He's surprised to see how hard working and not snooty she really is. They start connecting and then HOLY SMOKES - BAM! Sawyer Bennett gives you a super shock that ties them together and makes their bond grow so much stronger.

This is a beautiful love story that is just written so well. Brody and Alyssa are scorching hot together and tender at the same time. You truly get to watch Brody and his broken self get healed and it's hard to describe how wonderfully written it is. It was an amazing, romantic and emotional story.

Make It A Double The Last Call Series Book 2 edition by Sawyer Bennett Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I was really intrigued by Brody and his story. I couldn’t wait to find out what he’d done and why he had gone to jail for five years. In On the Rocks, I could totally understand why he was so closed off and didn’t really want to be a part of the group. I didn’t understand why he was such a jerk to Alyssa though. In Make it a Double we get all of our questions answered. Brody’s attitude and actions make so much more sense. His story is heartbreaking and something that made me so very angry.

I absolutely loved Brody and Alyssa. Even before they start exploring their possible feelings for each other, I thought they were both strong, interesting characters. I loved them even more the minute that they started letting themselves see that they could be great together. They did a lot to build each other up and to help each other get over pieces and people from their past. I definitely felt a deeper connection to these characters and between these characters than I did in the first book. I can’t wait to read more of this series.
This was a great read. I gave it four stars because it did not give an epilogue for us to know what happened. We know that they all got together but to what point do they share what their future lives became. Also we didn't find out about allissa's mom. What became of her and how did she take the arrest. Too many unanswered questions that may or maynot beanswered in the other characters book.
I'm finding the story to be overly detailed.
Sawyer is trying to paint Alyssa as some intuitive character, but it feels forced. After one day with Brody she seems to have him all figured out. Rather than explain Brody's character through the eyes of Alyssa why not inform the reader what we should really understand about Brody. Alyssa speculating about Brody does not help me understand his true character. Brody spent enough time prejudging her in the beginning. Brody watches Alyssa work in the animal shelter and gets this epiphany that she is not the rich heiress he claimed her of being.
This story is hard to settle into. I'm feeling a disconnect with the characters due to the over wording of the story.
Alyssa overthinks and overanalyzes each situation.
The girls are very shallow minded characters.
The author fights hard to disprove misjudgment and labeling for some characters but then others it's blatantly obvious that some people fit into a certain label.
Once I filter through the word fillers by skimming the story to get to the heart of the plot then it's not a bad story.
I loved this story.
The second book in the Last Call series.
Brody and Alyssa.
Never judge a book by its cover. That saying can also be applied to people. Never judge a person on what you think you know about them. Odds are you would be wrong.
Brody was. He was judging Alyssa on the fact that she came from a wealthy family. Just like his ex girlfriend. The ex that ruined his life. So, yes, he holds a bit of a grudge against entitled princesses.
Alyssa’s family is wealthy, and by the luck of her DNA, so is she. She shuns all things glitz and glamor and designer. Has no desire to be anyone’s arm candy while attending the trendiest fund raisers. She would rather be in worn jeans and t-shirts while caring for the animals at her shelter.
These two, while having been friendly acquaintances before he was sent to prison, are now less than friendly.
But when Alyssa is in need of help, and no one is around but Brody, he watches her as he helps. And what he sees starts to open his eyes to who the real Alyssa truly is. When she over hears a secret he’s kept from everyone, including his family, it draws the two of them even closer. Finally starting the healing process for Brody’s soul.
I loved both Alyssa and Brody. I always felt there was more to his story, and boy is there. Alyssa is just what he needed. Strong, caring and extremely patient with him. The two of them together are perfect.
The story was well written, fast paced, kept my attention from beginning to end. It’s told from both points of view. Very little angst and drama.
Each book revolves around a different couple, and can be read as a standalone, but all past and secondary characters are involved in each book.
